Last Sunday I went to NYC for the first time. I felt very excited, almost nervous having only caught a glimpse of the Manhattan skyline on the way from JFK up to New Paltz, I didn’t know what to expect. Would it be like in the movies or TV shows I’ve watched? Would it be anything like the big European cities I’ve visited? – No, it wasn’t. It was much bigger, much noisier and much cooler than any city I’d ever been to. I was speechless, I still am, and it’s hard to describe exactly what I am feeling. All I can say for sure is that the Big Apple has exceeded my expectations in a very very positive way and I want to go back there as soon as possible!
As Monday was Labor Day, we (the girls I’m spending most of the time here with and me) decided to stay overnight, which proved to be a great idea as we got to see far more than if we’d gone back Sunday night.
When we arrived, we first went to Times Square, took lots of pictures, got coffee and Pretzels and then went on to drop off our bags at the hotel. We had booked a very cute place and actually got a room with fire escapes up to the rooftop – absolutely amazing!! We were probably not meant to go up there, but it felt really cool the be relatively high up (8th floor) but to be surrounded by sooooo many buiding far (!!!) higher than that.We kicked off day 2, Labor Day, with very yummy breakfast and then we went downtown to the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Although it was quite foggy (jeez, I just can’t get used to it being so incredibly hot an humid!!), I got a pretty good sight of the lady, I expected her to be bigger though ;) The view onto Manhattan from the ferry is breathtaking… I really want to do the ferry ride again when the sight is clear! Then we went by subway (love NYC subway by the way – it’s airconditioned hahaha) to Brooklyn and visited the West Indian Day Parade there. That was sooo much fun: everyone was dancing, singing, eating and having a great time … (maybe also because it smelled of weed everywhere?!) :)
To round up this fantastic weekend in the city, we met one of my friends from Germany and went for Cosmopolitans in the West Village (soooo Sex and the City ;) ) – perfect end to a perfect trip!!
Well, so what was my impression / what are my thoughts of this place? – I am still trying to sort my thoughts but I can say that I am amazed at the sheer size of NYC. Before I left, a friend told me that it would be very weird to never be able to see an entire building, and he was right, it’s odd, and I felt incredibly small. The city was not as smelly as I thought it would be and the only time I found it dirty was at Times Square at night.
There are so many things about the city that you see on TV or in movies that are actually real and on every corner you could be reminded of series like Friends (I can’t count the times one of us girls saw something an referred to a quotes from Friends!), Sex and the City, Gossip Girl etc.
I like that you have spots in the city that are really busy, where traffic is heavy and people rush past you and other places like i.e. Central Park are very calm and relaxing. Could I live there? – YES!! I have become such a city-person that I enjoy walking through the streets even when it’s busy. I like the buzz, the smell, the atmosphere, the beauty even the subway… and after the initial shock of “actually being in the Big Apple”, I instantly felt very comfortable and happy! :)
